Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that everyone can learn music with the right guidance, encouragement and a personalized approach. My goal is to make every lesson enjoyable, motivating, and tailored to each student's interests and goals
With a comprehensive approach, I focus on developing real musicianship so that students understand every aspect of a piece instead of just memorizing notes
After a few short months of lessons, you'll be surprised at how students can begin reading music without assistance and can solve musical problems on their own. In about a year, I often deem students "music lesson optional" where they can effectively be independent and teach themselves
While the initial hurdles can be challenging, the skill of playing music can provide for a lifetime of enjoyment. On any day, you can wake up, decide to learn a song, print out sheet music, and just start playing!
Drum and Piano Lessons:
Here are just some of the topics which we'll cover
Music Theory - Why things sound the way that they do and how to read all of the symbols involved with standard notation
Patterns, Rudiments, and Scales - Patterns that help develop a specific skill or help to visualize a shape that we'll be using in a song
Grooves - Short beats or riffs
Licks/Fills - Short melodic lines
Etudes - Brief pieces which help develop a fundamental skill
Repertoire - Full songs with several sections that sound complete as a standalone piece
Solos - A passage that features you
Improvisation - Spontaneously creating a work that's within certain parameters
Arranging/Composition - Creating a new work based off of an existing piece or making a completely new one
Listening - How to critically listen to music and what to listen for
Transcription/Ear Training - Notating what you hear and developing your ear
Ensemble Lessons:
I also offer ensemble lessons for voice, guitar, bass, piano, drums, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and clarinet. It can either be one-on-one where I accompany you on piano/drums or in a group setting of up to 4 students
We will be playing real music in real time so it feels more like band practice and less like a class! Together, we will develop all of the musicianship skills to play in an ensemble like locking in rhythmically, dynamics and balance, listening to others, fills, improvisation, and soloing
Offerings:
Retention - Brief tutorial videos so that you can practice with through the week
Custom Arrangements - Sheet music for any song that is tailored to your skill level
Outings - We'll attend concerts where the musicianship is exceptionally high and the artist will provide for a memorable experience
Recitals - Performance opportunities for students at hip locations around Austin
